Well....Today, AFTER I FINALLY got all the suspension work done, and new disc brakes installed, torsion bars, sway bar, tie rod ends, expensive QA1 shocks, and everything else that was NEW and my car being down since October, and also the $90 alignment that I JUST got today...I go for a test drive...Runs great, handles terrific, goes down the road smoothly, no problems what so ever, gets sideways way too easy, the new 3:55 sure grip works amazingly, everything was perfect.....Until I pull into the driveway, and notice a "noise"....It was a "screeching" noise...So I thought it was the belt at first, nope...not the belt...Then I thought it was the alternator bearing and water pump bearing, so I unhook the belt and start the engine...The "screeching" noise was still present, and got worse when I slightly revved it up...

I guess the engine has spun a mother f@#$%&g bearing...I just don't know what to think. There is no way I can possibly afford even a slight engine rebuild...I just dropped over 3 grand on all the suspension over the past 6 months...I don't know what to do...All is lost, and now I'm totally stuck. Maybe I should cut my losses and just sell the whole car for $2500...Who the hell knows...I don't know....This just plain out sucks, and is very depressing..I have the worst luck ever. Not cool man....not cool...

pick up a cheap well running diplomat or similar car, throw that in and rebuild the other one. They run fastest before the blow.

usually a spun bearing doesn't due any screeching noises, you just get alot of hammering. could be something easy.

take it to a PRO shop..find out whats wrong
pay them the $$$
this can be done in 1 day.

I had what I knew was a rod knock...tore the super slant six apart to up grade to a BB...1 bolt from the flex plate had come out and 1 was 1/2 off...
I did have an old school dude tell me it was the flex plate from what he heard..

can you post a video of it running ?
what type of car is it.?
keep the faith.

Chill, take a deep breath, and start your search for the noise over. I agree with 68 Hemi, not a bearing. I've spun bearings in 2 motors and they never screeched or squeeled. One would start up and run fine till it warmed up and then it sounded like you were rapping on the block with a ball peen hammer. They other let go at highway speed, it started to over heat, and then the ball peen hammer noise started. I think with some luck this is gonna turn out OK.
Sorry you're way out there on the left coast, I have a 68 318 you could have, Joe.

I can tell you that a spun bearing can screech. That was the first noise from Alan's 383 when he spun a bearing or three. It's not necessarily the end of the world, though. I've seen cranks that weren't all tore up and you MIGHT get away with bearings only (low percentage shot, but could work). Plus used 318s are not very expensive.

Main bearings can screech, usually not rods. I know how You feel Ive tore up a lot of motors. Go have a couple cold ones and if Ya gotta pull it just get out there and do it. Set of main bearings and turn the crank, not soo bad.l

Well, today I hooked up a mechanical oil pressure gauge from the back of the block and started it up. At first the noise wasn't present, but after it warms up, it starts to make the screeching noise. Here's a pic of the oil pressure reading a steady 70 psi at idle during warm up.

I think it possibly could be the cam bearings, not the main bearings because wouldn't the oil pressure be low and fluctuate? It also isn't the flex plate or flex plate bolts.. I checked those...

I am pretty sure everything is installed correctly. It's a stock 318, with a very mild cam. I haven't touched the engine since I got this car. It ran very good, had good power, and revved easily without any problems. When I had the valve covers off to change to MP ones, the stock rockers looked fine, everything was good...This noise just came up yesterday, after the first test drive after it was sitting for a few months...I changed the oil, new filter and everything a couple months ago..

Alan still had decent oil pressure (as I recall) with the spun bearings. Drop the pan and check for metal filings (gold flakes). Also, you can change a crank and bearings without even pulling the heads, let alone the pistons and rods. I did that to a 273 many years ago when I had a wasted thrust bearing. I't a little tricky to all the rods at the right angle to get the crank back in, but it can be done.

well I pulled the oil filter and drained it...there are no metallic particles, I ran a magnet in it as well...no metal particles...I checked the trans, I don't think it could be that...I'm almost certain the oil slinger is correct..I guess I could pull the fuel pump and check the eccentric to see if it is loose...

I ran it one last time right now, and I noticed that when you slightly rev it very slowly, the noise progresses...Like the cam may be thrusting forward...You can't hear it when you rev it fast, just kind of a slow progressive rev and the noise becomes evident...

Also, I'm gonna pull the fuel pump like was mentioned before to see if the eccentric is loose...I'm not really sure on what to look for though, or how to tell...

USAJon, I bought the car almost 2 years ago...lol...Can't really contact the previous owner..

Check your harmonic balancer and make sure its not rubbing on the cover. I had that problem with the 360 in my Ramcharger. It slipped on the rubber doughnut. Good luck. I have never heard a spun bearing squeal but doesnt mean it cant I guess.
